VG-XEOS: Takefu's new generation V Gold steel
The newest named stainless in the V Gold family from Takefu Special Steel, the Echizen mill behind VG-10 and SG2. The pitch: VG-10 class cutting with corrosion resistance and hardness that no longer trade against each other.
VG-XEOS is Takefu's rethink of the VG-10 formula: keep the cutting performance, raise the corrosion resistance and hardness ceiling.
Takefu catalogs it in the V Gold stainless series and keeps the composition private. The most detailed public technical description comes from Spyderco, which had the steel independently analyzed and characterizes it as a rebalanced VG-10 optimized for corrosion resistance. The best-known knives in it are Yu Kurosaki's New Gekko line, documented on our Yu Kurosaki page. The steel is young, data is thin, and this page says plainly what is and is not known.
What VG-XEOS actually is
VG-XEOS (V金XEOS, sometimes written VG XEOS) is a stainless blade steel from Takefu Special Steel Co., Ltd. of Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, the small specialty mill whose VG-10 and SG2 defined two generations of Japanese stainless kitchen knives. Takefu catalogs VG-XEOS within its V Gold stainless series, alongside VG-1, VG-2, VG-5, VG-7, VG-10, and VG-10W, and separately from its powder-metallurgy line (Super Gold 2, Cobalt Special, and SPG STRIX). That placement matters: as documented, VG-XEOS is a next step in the conventional V Gold lineage, not a powder steel.
The mill's own framing is unusually poetic for a steel catalog. Takefu explains the name as a compound: the X stands for crossing corrosion resistance and hardness at a previously unknown high level, and EOS, the Greek goddess of dawn, expresses the hope that the steel opens a new stage for cutlery. The official description says the steel achieves corrosion resistance and hardness simultaneously, a pairing Takefu characterizes as historically difficult, and credits a special melting method with producing a fine microstructure that improves wear resistance, strength, and hardenability.
That is the entire official technical story. Takefu has published no datasheet, no composition, and no heat-treatment guidance for VG-XEOS. Its product page lists the composition as not disclosed. Everything else in circulation comes from the knife makers using it, the retailers selling those knives, and one independent laboratory analysis, and this page labels each of those accordingly.
VG-XEOS is new by steel standards. The first production knives we can document, Yu Kurosaki's reworked Gekko line, appeared in 2023, and Western adoption followed through 2024. As with any steel this young, the design intent is documented but the track record is early, and you should read every performance claim below with that in mind.
The mill behind it
Takefu's pedigree is the strongest reason to pay attention. This is the mill that made stainless credible in serious kitchens with VG-10 in the 1990s and then set the powder-steel benchmark with SG2. It supplies billets and pre-laminated blanks to workshops across Echizen and beyond, and its steels tend to spread outward from that home ecosystem. When Takefu adds a new named grade to the V Gold family, its first users are usually smiths in the mill's own orbit, and that is exactly the pattern VG-XEOS is following. Composition: what is actually known
Bluntly: Takefu has not published a chemical composition for VG-XEOS. The mill's own product page marks the composition as not disclosed, and no official percentages for carbon, chromium, cobalt, or anything else exist in its public materials as of this writing. Any site printing exact VG-XEOS numbers as fact is either quoting an independent lab analysis without saying so, or guessing. We will not print figures we cannot verify.
There is, however, one genuinely useful public data point. Spyderco, which released a VG-XEOS blade in its Mule Team test series in July 2024, states that the composition is a trade secret and describes its own laboratory analysis of the steel in relative terms: compared with VG-10, the analysis found reduced carbon and cobalt, increased chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum, and the addition of nickel and tungsten. Spyderco summarizes the result as a matrix of low-volume, higher-wear-resistance carbides within a chromium-enriched microstructure. We treat this as the best available third-party characterization, not as official data.

One inference we label as ours: for the corrosion-first positioning and the analyzed chromium increase to both be true, VG-XEOS almost certainly carries more chromium than VG-10's published 14.5-15.5%. Where it actually lands, and what the carbon figure is, remains private to Takefu and its partner workshops.
VG-XEOS vs VG-10
VG-10 is the natural benchmark, and the comparison is unusually well framed because Spyderco, working from its own analysis, calls VG-XEOS essentially a rebalanced VG-10 optimized for corrosion resistance. Reading the sourced claims together:
- Edge retention: comparable, per the one third-party characterization. Spyderco's stated expectation is edge retention comparable to VG-10 with significantly enhanced corrosion resistance. That is a claim from a maker's lab work, not an independent benchmark series, so we rank it credible but unconfirmed.
- Corrosion resistance: the design point. Takefu's own description and every maker listing agree that rust resistance is what this steel is for. Directionally this is the safest claim on the page.
- Hardness: listed slightly above typical VG-10. VG-10 knives commonly run 60-62 HRC; VG-XEOS knives are being listed at roughly 61-63 (details in section 05). The overlap is real, and heat treatment matters more than the label.
- Fineness of edge: claimed, not proven. Some specialty retailers describe VG-XEOS as supporting a finer edge than standard VG-10. This is retailer language consistent with the fine-microstructure story, and we pass it along as exactly that.
What nobody should tell you yet: that VG-XEOS beats VG-10 outright. VG-10 has thirty years of documented behavior across thousands of production lines. VG-XEOS has two years and a handful of makers. Our SG2 vs VG-10 comparison shows how long it takes for a steel's real reputation to settle.
VG-XEOS vs SG2
The other question buyers ask, since Kurosaki works extensively in both steels. The honest answer is that they are different tools from the same mill:
- Different production class. SG2 is a powder-metallurgy steel; VG-XEOS sits in Takefu's conventional stainless series. Powder processing buys SG2 its extremely uniform carbide structure and its documented edge-retention advantage over conventional stainless grades.
- Hardness. SG2 knives typically run 62-64 HRC; VG-XEOS listings cluster at 61-63. Adjacent, with SG2 a step higher.
- Corrosion resistance. This is where VG-XEOS makes its case. SG2 is a good stainless; VG-XEOS is designed corrosion-first, and the analyzed chromium increase points the same direction. Direct comparative testing does not exist yet, so we state the design intent rather than a verdict.
- Price and availability. In Kurosaki's own catalog, the VG-XEOS Gekko line generally sits below his SG2 series in price, which tracks the conventional-vs-powder cost difference.
If you want the most proven edge retention Takefu sells, SG2 remains the answer. If you want a lower-maintenance stainless with the mill's newest thinking on corrosion resistance, VG-XEOS is the interesting option.
Hardness as reported
Takefu has published no official hardness specification for VG-XEOS, so every number in circulation is a maker or retailer listing for a specific knife. What the listings show:
- Kurosaki New Gekko knives are commonly listed at about 62 HRC, with some retailers stating 62-63.
- Across all VG-XEOS listings we reviewed, stated hardness clusters at roughly 61-63 HRC, a notch above where most VG-10 production knives land.
The usual caveat applies with extra force for a young steel: hardness is a heat-treatment outcome, not a property of the alloy alone, and with only a few workshops running VG-XEOS, the listed range reflects a small sample of skilled early adopters. Expect the spread to widen if adoption does.
Who is using VG-XEOS so far
The verified list is short, which is normal for a Takefu steel this young, and it starts a few hundred meters from the mill:
- Yu Kurosaki (Echizen), New Gekko line. The flagship use. Kurosaki's reworked Gekko (月光, moonlight) series, announced by the workshop as New Gekko (新月光) in 2023, is built on VG-XEOS with stainless cladding, in gyuto, bunka, santoku, nakiri, kiritsuke, sujihiki, and petty formats. - Nigara Hamono (Hirosaki). The Tsugaru forge has released VG-XEOS models documented by specialty retailers, including tsuchime and Damascus finishes, some under a collaboration with the Hatsukokoro brand.
- G. Sakai (Seki). The veteran Seki maker lists VG-XEOS outdoor and neck knives in its own official shop, an early sign of the steel crossing from kitchen to sporting cutlery.
- Spyderco (USA), Mule Team MT41. Released July 2024 as a bare test blade so enthusiasts could evaluate the steel directly. Notable less as a product than as the source of the only public independent analysis of the steel's chemistry.

Reading the table honestly: VG-10 is the proven all-rounder, SG2 the proven retention champion, and VG-XEOS the corrosion-focused newcomer whose central claims are documented as claims, partially corroborated by one lab analysis, and not yet independently benchmarked.
What an owner should expect
Everything in this section is early-report territory: maker claims, retailer descriptions, and the first waves of owner feedback from 2023 onward. There is no long-term independent test data on VG-XEOS, and our own bench testing has not included it. Labeled as such, the early picture:
- Out-of-box sharpness reads as excellent, which says as much about Kurosaki's grinding as about the steel. New Gekko knives arrive thin and keen.
- Corrosion behavior is the strong suit. No pattern of staining complaints has surfaced in the listings and owner commentary we reviewed, consistent with the corrosion-first design.
- Sharpening is reported as unintimidating. Retail descriptions treat VG-XEOS as a normal waterstone steel that rewards good technique without carbon-steel discipline or diamond-stone requirements. This fits its conventional, non-powder classification.
- Edge retention reports are positive but thin. Comparable-to-VG-10 is the sourced expectation; multi-month professional feedback in volume simply does not exist yet.
Our position mirrors what we wrote about SPG STRIX: coherent design story, credible mill, positive early signal, and not enough data for superlatives. If you buy VG-XEOS today you are buying mostly on the maker's craft and the mill's track record, and with Kurosaki's New Gekko both of those are strong.
Care and sharpening
- Treat it as a premium stainless, which still means stain-resistant, not stain-proof. Hand wash, dry promptly, never soak, never dishwasher. The corrosion-first design buys forgiveness, not immunity.
- Standard synthetic waterstones are the reported tool. A 1000-grit stone for maintenance bevels and a 3000-6000 finisher cover kitchen needs. Nothing in the documentation suggests diamond plates are necessary.
- Respect the listed hardness with your angles. At 61-63 HRC, 13-15 degrees per side is the sensible envelope for general work; save extreme thinness until toughness data matures.
- Hone with a ceramic rod or fine stone touch-ups, not a grooved steel, which does little at this hardness.
- Board discipline as usual: wood or soft plastic, no twisting, no frozen foods, no bones.
