Seki, Gifu Prefecture, is responsible for roughly 60% of Japan's kitchen knife exports. But "Seki knives" is not one thing, it is a network of distinct manufacturing philosophies, from global corporations to family workshops producing a few hundred knives a year.
This directory covers 15 makers we have verified as genuinely Seki-based and active (with one honest exception, noted below). A note on who is NOT on this list. Several famous names are routinely mislabeled as "Seki" makers. We moved them to their correct regions rather than list them here: Ryusen is in Echizen, Fukui; Tamahagane (Kataoka) is in Tsubame-Sanjo, Niigata; Kikuichi traces to Nara. Two historic Seki names, Hiromoto and Fujiwara Kanefusa's kitchen line, are no longer in active production and have been retired from the directory. Accuracy over volume.
