Modern Japanese Swordsmiths: The Craft Today

The Japanese sword did not end with the samurai. A small, tightly regulated community of licensed smiths still forges blades by hand from native steel, under one of the most restrictive craft laws anywhere in the world. This is an honest account of who they are, how the law shapes their work, what a new sword actually costs, and where that same fire still burns in a kitchen knife.

The framework

A craft governed by law

Almost every romantic idea about the Japanese sword collides, at some point, with a filing cabinet. Modern swordmaking in Japan is not a free trade. It sits inside a legal framework built after the Second World War, when the occupation authorities restricted the possession and manufacture of swords, and it has stayed tightly controlled ever since.

The commonly cited turning point is 1953, when traditional sword production was permitted to resume under strict conditions, and the framework was later folded into Japan's broader Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law, which most sources date to 1958 and which has been revised many times since. The practical effect is simple to state and hard to overstate: you cannot legally forge a Japanese sword in Japan unless the state has authorized you to do so, and even then, only under limits on how many blades you may produce.

That single fact explains almost everything else about the modern craft. It explains why there are so few smiths, why a new blade is expensive, why apprenticeships are long, and why the whole enterprise behaves less like an industry and more like a supervised preservation of a national art. The sword is treated in law and in practice as an art object first, not a weapon.

A note on our sourcing. The figures on this page, apprenticeship length, the monthly production cap, the number of active smiths, come from published craft-association material, museum and reference writing, and press reporting. We label them as commonly cited rather than exact, because sources vary and because official counts and working counts are not the same thing. Where accounts disagree, we say so.
The pipeline

Becoming a swordsmith: the training pipeline

There is no shortcut and no self-certification. The path to a swordsmith's license runs through another smith, and it takes years.

1. Apprenticeship under a licensed smith

An aspiring smith must apprentice under a smith who already holds a license. The commonly cited minimum is a formal apprenticeship of at least five years. In practice, most accounts describe a longer road, often a decade or more, before a smith works fully independently, because five years is the floor rather than the norm. Early apprenticeship is famously unglamorous: charcoal, cleaning, water, and endless repetition long before a student is trusted with the important stages of the work.

2. Formal training and examination

Alongside or after the apprenticeship, candidates take part in training organized under the Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkacho), commonly described as a training course for the preservation of art-sword-smithing techniques. To qualify, a candidate must demonstrate the ability to forge a sword to standard, judged by senior smiths.

3. Authorization

Only after that examination does a smith become authorized, receiving the license that allows lawful production. The requirement is essentially state permission to practice, granted through the cultural authorities, with registration handled through the relevant public-safety framework. In other words, the license is not a trade certificate you buy. It is a permission the state grants to a very small number of people it has judged competent to continue a protected art.

The raw material for that training is itself special. Genuine traditional blades are forged from tamahagane, the steel produced in a clay smelting furnace called a tatara. We cover the metallurgy in detail in our companion reference on tamahagane and the tatara furnace.

The limits

The two-sword rule and other limits

The most quoted rule in the whole craft is the monthly production cap. It is commonly stated as follows: a licensed smith may forge no more than two long swords per month. Shorter blades are counted proportionally in the usual telling, so a wakizashi is often described as counting as roughly two thirds of a long sword and a tanto as roughly one third, though the exact accounting is described slightly differently across sources.

Two long blades a month works out to a commonly cited ceiling of around twenty-four long swords a year, and in reality most smiths produce well under any theoretical maximum, because each blade is slow, hand-forged work and because demand, not the legal cap, is usually the binding constraint.

Why the cap exists. The limit is generally explained as a quality-and-preservation measure rather than a supply quota. By capping output, the framework pushes each smith toward fewer, better blades, and it keeps modern production aligned with the idea of the sword as a hand-made art object rather than a manufactured good. We present the specific figures as commonly cited, because the numbers are repeated widely but the precise legal wording is technical and is paraphrased differently in different sources.

Layered on top of the production cap are the ordinary controls that come with any regulated blade: registration of finished swords, and the general legal treatment of the Japanese sword as a controlled art object. The combined effect is a craft that simply cannot scale, by design.

The steel

The steel supply: the Nittoho tatara

A regulated craft needs a regulated material, and here the bottleneck is dramatic. Traditional sword steel, tamahagane, is not bought off an industrial shelf. It is smelted in a tatara, and today essentially one operation supplies sword-grade tamahagane for the whole country.

That operation is the Nittoho tatara in Shimane Prefecture, in the Okuizumo region long associated with iron-sand smelting. It was re-established in the mid-1970s, commonly dated to around 1977, under the oversight of the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, usually abbreviated NBTHK. The tatara was revived specifically to keep both the steel and the smelting technique alive, and the smelting itself is treated as a preservation-worthy technique.

How a smelt works, in brief

A single tatara smelt is a large, deliberately inefficient undertaking. Published accounts describe a clay furnace charged over many hours with iron sand and charcoal in very large quantities, burning for something on the order of a few days, and yielding a large iron bloom called a kera. Only a portion of that bloom is the high-carbon tamahagane that smiths actually want. The figures vary by source and by smelt, so we describe them as approximate: tens of tons of iron sand and charcoal consumed to produce a bloom of a few tons, of which only a fraction is prime sword steel.

Why this matters for smiths

Because there is effectively one sword-grade source, tamahagane is distributed to licensed smiths through the sword-preservation framework rather than bought freely on an open market. That scarcity is one more reason the craft cannot expand: even a smith with the skill and the license still needs an allocation of the right steel. The material itself is a gatekeeper.

The community

The All Japan Swordsmith Association

Modern smiths are not scattered lone artisans. Many belong to the All Japan Swordsmith Association, the professional body that represents licensed smiths, promotes the craft, and helps organize the exhibitions and competitions through which reputations are made.

The association's stated purpose, in the terms it uses about itself, is to preserve and pass on the art of Japanese sword making, to educate the public about modern swords, to promote exchange among smiths, and to support the standing of swordsmiths as a group. In practice it functions as the connective tissue of a very small profession: it is how smiths, collectors, and the sword-preservation bodies stay in contact, and it is one of the venues where new work is judged.

That judging matters more than it might sound. Because the craft is so small and so regulated, a smith's standing is built less through retail volume and more through recognition, placing well in the annual competitions, earning honors, and in the rarest cases being elevated beyond the ordinary judging track altogether. That last distinction, the highest a living smith can reach, is commonly referred to by the term meaning roughly beyond examination (mukansa), and only a small number of living smiths have ever held it.

The reality

The declining-numbers reality

Here we have to be careful, because this is exactly the kind of claim that gets repeated with false precision. The honest summary is that the number of active swordsmiths in Japan is small and has been broadly declining, but the exact figures vary a great deal depending on what is being counted.

Commonly cited rough figures put the number of licensed swordsmiths in the low hundreds, with the number who actually work at it regularly, and the far smaller number who make a full living from swords alone, dramatically lower. You will see figures such as roughly one hundred fifty active smiths quoted in press and craft writing, sometimes framed as a fall from a larger count in earlier decades. We present these as estimates, not counts, for three reasons:

  • Licensed is not the same as active. Holding a license does not mean a smith is currently forging, so a registry figure overstates the working population.
  • Active is not the same as full-time. Many who forge do so part-time or alongside other work, because the two-blade cap and the small market make swords alone a hard living.
  • Sources genuinely disagree. Different bodies and different reports use different definitions and different years, so the numbers do not line up neatly.

What is not in dispute is the direction and the pressure: an aging population of smiths, a demanding multi-year apprenticeship that deters entrants, a hard cap on output, and a narrow market. That combination is why the craft is routinely described as under strain, and why so much institutional effort goes into training the next generation.

A handful of modern smiths are widely recognized well beyond Japan. We have limited this list to names we can verify, and we note living or deceased status carefully, because that is precisely the sort of detail people get wrong.

Yoshindo Yoshihara

Widely regarded as one of the foremost living Japanese swordsmiths, Yoshindo Yoshihara works in Tokyo and represents a long family line of smiths. He learned the craft within his family and has been licensed since the mid-1960s. His work is held in major museum collections internationally, and his Tokyo workshop is notable for continuing to train apprentices, which matters for a craft worried about its own continuity.

Beyond living working smiths, the modern era is defined by the smiths honored as Living National Treasure, the English rendering of the designation ningen kokuho. The three below have all passed, but their names anchor the modern lineage:

Miyairi Akihira

Also read as Miyairi Yukihira, he was designated a Living National Treasure for swordmaking and is widely described as the head of a line that produced later master smiths. Sources give his dates as 1913 to 1977. His significance to the modern craft is partly through his own blades and partly through the smiths he trained.

Amata Akitsugu

Named a Living National Treasure for swordmaking, with dates commonly given as 1927 to 2013. He is regularly cited among the defining smiths of the postwar revival.

Osumi Toshihira

Born in 1932 in Gunma and trained in the lineage of Miyairi, Osumi Toshihira was designated a Living National Treasure for swordmaking. Sources describe him as a leading smith of the postwar generation. We have seen his birth year cited consistently but found less consistent reporting on other biographical details, so we limit ourselves to what is well attested.

Why we are cautious with names. Reputations in this world are real, but the internet is full of confident, wrong biographical detail, especially living-or-deceased status and exact dates. We have named only smiths whose standing and status we could verify across reference sources, and we have flagged the points where reporting is thinner. If a claim is not on this page, it is often because we could not stand behind it.

What a modern sword costs

Newly made traditional swords have a name of their own, shinsakuto, meaning newly made sword. People always want a number, so here is one, clearly labeled for what it is.

The important point is not the exact figure, which we will not pretend to pin down, but the shape of it. When you understand that a smith is legally limited to a couple of long blades a month, trains for years to earn the right to forge them at all, and works from a steel supply that runs through a single furnace, the price stops being surprising. It is the arithmetic of a protected craft, not a markup.

The connection

From sword smith to knife maker

Here is where this history stops being a museum piece and starts being a kitchen tool. The disciplines that define traditional swordmaking, differential steel, controlled heat treatment, hand-forging and hand-finishing, patient geometry, did not disappear when demand for swords collapsed. To be exact about what is and is not the same: a modern kitchen knife is almost never forged from tamahagane, and the great majority are made with modern steels and modern methods rather than by a licensed sword smith. What carries over is the thinking, the respect for heat treatment, the pursuit of a hard, keen edge supported by a tougher body, the idea that a blade is finished by hand and not merely finished by a machine. That inheritance is what a good Japanese kitchen knife is really trading on.
