Japanese Scissors: Hasami From Ikebana to Tailoring
Japan is the one country where the ancient U-spring shear never died. From Sakai scissor smiths to Meiji tailoring shears and the flower scissors of ikebana, this is the other half of the Japanese blade story.
Japanese scissors split into two families, and both descend from sword-country metallurgy.
The native wabasami (和鋏), a one-piece U-spring shear squeezed in the fist, survived in Japan long after the rest of the world moved on. Western pivot scissors (洋鋏) went mainstream in the Meiji era, and Japanese smiths promptly rebuilt them with forge-welded carbon steel, producing tailoring shears, ikebana scissors, and today's hairdressing shears. The two families of Japanese scissors
Every Japanese scissor belongs to one of two families, and the split tells you most of what you need to know about the craft.
The first family is the nigiri-basami (握り鋏), literally "grip scissors." It is a single piece of forged steel bent into a U, with a blade at each end. There is no pivot screw and there are no finger holes. You squeeze it in your fist, the spring of the steel opens it again, and the two edges shear past each other. Because its most common job is snipping thread, it is also called itokiri-basami (糸切り鋏), thread-cutting scissors, and because it is the native Japanese form it goes by wabasami (和鋏), "Japanese scissors." All three names describe the same object.
What makes the wabasami remarkable is not that Japan invented it. Spring shears of this general type are ancient and once existed across Europe and Asia. What is remarkable is that Japan kept it. Japanese reference sources note that Japan is the only country where this ancient spring-shear form remained in wide production into the modern era. Everywhere else the pivot scissor drove it extinct; in Japan, seamstresses, kimono makers, and craft workers kept the U-spring alive, and smiths kept forging it to a very high standard.
The second family is the yobasami (洋鋏), "Western scissors": two separate blades crossing at a pivot screw, with bows for the fingers. Pivot scissors were not unknown in old Japan. A pair presented by Portuguese traders survives from the Tokugawa era, and Western-style scissors saw limited specialist use before the country opened. But it was the Meiji era (1868 to 1912), with its Western clothing, Western barbering, and Western tailoring, that made the pivot scissor the mainstream Japanese form. The wabasami did not disappear; it retreated to the sewing box, where it remains standard equipment to this day.
Sasuke and the Sakai scissor lineage
Sakai, the port city south of Osaka, is best known as the capital of professional Japanese kitchen knives, a story we tell in full on our Sakai reference page. Less well known is that Sakai has a scissor tradition of its own, and its most famous name is Sasuke (佐助).
The Sasuke workshop traces its lineage to a gunsmithing house called Sumiyoshiya (住吉屋), part of Sakai's firearms industry, which supplied matchlock guns to feudal domains for centuries. When demand for guns collapsed in the late Edo period, the family turned its forging skill toward scissors; the scissor workshop's own founding is generally dated to 1867, on the eve of the Meiji Restoration. The same hands that had made gun barrels and springs proved very good at making blades that had to meet each other perfectly.
A note of honest caution on the numbers you may see quoted elsewhere. The current master, Yasuhiro Hirakawa, a certified traditional craftsman, is described in Sakai's own tourism materials as the 22nd generation of the family line counting from the Sumiyoshiya gunsmiths, and the 5th generation of scissor makers. Some retellings compress this into "22 generations of scissor making," which is not what the sources say. The scissor craft itself is five generations deep; the family line behind it is far older.
Sasuke today forges garden and bonsai shears, ikebana scissors, and kitchen knives in tiny quantities, each pair adjusted by hand so the blades ride against each other with exactly the right tension. It is a one-smith operation of the kind that Sakai's knife world, with its specialized forgers and sharpeners, rarely produces anymore.
The 1867 founding date and the Sumiyoshiya gun-house backstory are consistently reported in Japanese sources, including Sakai tourism and regional brand materials, but the generation counts differ depending on whether the writer counts the whole family line (22) or the scissor era only (5). We give both and encourage skepticism toward any single big number.
Rasha-basami: the Meiji tailoring shear
When Japan adopted Western dress in the Meiji era, it needed a new tool. Kimono cloth had been cut with small knives and thread-snips; wool suiting demanded long, heavy shears. The Japanese name for the tool that answered is rasha-kiri-basami (羅紗切鋏), "rasha-cutting scissors," usually shortened in speech to rasha-basami. Rasha (羅紗) means thick woolen cloth, and the word itself is a Meiji-flavored borrowing from the Portuguese raxa. The same tool is also called tachi-basami (裁ち鋏), cutting-out shears.
The standard origin account credits a smith named Yajiro Yoshida (吉田弥十郎), born 1859 into a smithing family in the Senju district of Tokyo. Imported Western tailor's shears of the day were heavy, awkward, and hard to keep sharp. Yoshida, working after the Meiji sword ban had pushed many smiths out of their old trade, applied Japanese sword-forging technique, hard steel forge-welded to a softer body, to build a lighter, sharper shear suited to Japanese hands. His pattern is regarded as the ancestor of the Japanese tailoring shear, and Tokyo's Taito ward documents the craft as a living cultural property.
Out of that lineage came the most famous name in Japanese tailoring shears: Shozaburo (庄三郎). The house descends directly from Yoshida's rasha-shear technique; its first-generation master, Shozaburo Miura, devoted his career to refining the tool, and craftsmen in the direct line still make the shears one pair at a time. Ask a Japanese dressmaker to name one great pair of shears and this is usually the word you hear. We will not put a precise founding year on the workshop, because the sources we trust do not state one cleanly, but the lineage from Yoshida's Meiji innovation is well documented.
One historical wrinkle worth stating plainly: some sources suggest Western tailoring shears trickled into Japan slightly before Meiji, with foreign tailors in the treaty ports. What is distinctly Meiji is the Japanese-made rasha shear, the moment imported form met native forging. That pattern, adopt, then out-forge, repeats across this whole page.
Ikebana scissors: warabite and koryu
Flower-arranging scissors, hana-basami (花鋏), are short, heavy pivot scissors with thick blades that crush-proof stems and cut green branches cleanly. They divide into two classic handle patterns, and the split maps loosely onto the schools of ikebana.
- Warabite (蕨手): the handles end in small inward curls, named for the fiddlehead of the warabi bracken fern they resemble. This pattern is also called the Ikenobo type (池坊型) and is the shape most Westerners picture when they think "ikebana scissors." No finger holes; the curled arms are simply gripped.
- Tsurute (蔓手): "vine handles," closed loops closer to an ordinary scissor bow. This pattern is also called the koryu type (古流型), after the Koryu school. If you have seen the term "koryu-basami," this is what it refers to; it is the counterpart of the warabite pattern, not a third family.
Bonsai shears belong to the same craft family: the wide-bowed satsuki and bonsai scissors, the long-nosed twig shears, and the general garden scissors called ueki-basami (植木鋏) all come from the same workshops and the same forging logic, heavy carbon-steel blades meeting at a hand-fitted pivot. Why so much steel for flowers? Because ikebana scissors are expected to cut everything from a tulip stem to a finger-thick branch with the same tool, and to do it for decades. A good pair is forged, not stamped, and can be re-tensioned and re-ground by a professional sharpener indefinitely.
Banshu and Ono: the grip-shear heartland
If Sakai is Japan's knife capital and Seki its production powerhouse, the historical heartland of the humble grip shear is Banshu (播州), the old name for the Harima region of southern Hyogo Prefecture. Ono's city records trace grip-scissor forging to 1783, when a local smith named Sobei Morimachi returned from a scissor apprenticeship in Osaka and brought the craft home. Banshu blade-making as a whole claims roughly 250 years of Edo-period history, and Ono grew into the national center of nigiri-basami production, the thread-snips in practically every Japanese sewing box.
The region's best-known workshop abroad today is the Tajika Haruo Scissors Works, a small family forge founded in 1928 and now run by roughly its fourth generation. The family hand-forges scissors for herbs, flowers, kitchen, and cloth, forge-welding a cutting edge of Yasuki white paper steel, the same premium carbon steel family used in high-end kitchen knives, onto a softer body. Interviews with the family describe every pair being filed, ground, and tension-fitted by hand.
English-language sources on the Tajika workshop are consistent about the founding date, the hand-forging, and the white paper steel, but they split on location, some placing the forge in Ono City and others in neighboring Kobe. Both sit in the old Banshu/Harima region of Hyogo, so we describe it as a Banshu-area workshop and leave the street address to the family. We also omit kanji for the family name because we could not confirm it to our standard.
Hairdressing shears: the modern industry
The most economically significant Japanese scissors today are not craft objects at all, or rather, they are craft objects wearing industrial clothes: professional hairdressing and barbering shears. Japanese shears are a global benchmark in salons, prized for their steel, their convex edges, and their precisely adjustable pivot tension.
Two regions dominate the story, and both will be familiar to readers of our knife-making regions guide. Seki in Gifu Prefecture, Japan's largest cutlery production center, applies its stainless-steel expertise to salon shears. The Sanjo and Tsubame district of Niigata Prefecture, Japan's metalworking north, hosts a dense cluster of specialist shear makers, many of them small firms grinding and balancing each pair by hand.
We will resist the temptation to crown a single "scissor capital" or quote market-share numbers; there are more than a hundred domestic makers, and the honest statement is simply that Seki and Sanjo/Tsubame are the two centers of gravity. What unites them is the same idea that runs through this whole page: two blades are a system, not a pair of knives, and the maker's real skill is in how they meet.
Steel and construction
Traditional Japanese scissors are built exactly like traditional Japanese knives, and that is not a metaphor. The classic construction forge-welds a thin layer of hard high-carbon steel, hagane (鋼), onto a body of soft iron or mild steel, jigane (地金). Only the mating face of each blade carries the hard steel; the spine and body stay soft and tough. The technique goes by names like tsuke-hagane and warikomi, and it descends from the same swordsmith logic described on our Sakai page: hard where the edge must be hard, soft where the tool must survive.
The payoff for scissors is specific:
- Edge life. The high-carbon layer can be hardened well beyond what a one-piece stamped scissor tolerates, so the shearing edges stay crisp far longer.
- Sharpenability. Because only a thin steel layer is hard, a sharpener can restore the edge without fighting the whole blade.
- Spring and give. In a nigiri-basami the soft body IS the spring. A one-piece hardened shear would snap; the laminated construction lets the U flex a million times.
Modern scissors, including most hairdressing shears and garden secateurs, use stainless or semi-stainless alloys instead: no rust worry, no lamination, hardness held to sensible levels. A dressmaker who oils her Shozaburo shears after every session and a gardener who leaves secateurs in the shed rain are both being served by the correct steel.
Care and sharpening
Here is the point this page has been building toward: scissors are not two knives on a screw, and you must not sharpen them like knives.
A knife cuts because one edge wedges through food. Scissors cut because two edges shear past each other while touching at a single moving contact point. Japanese sharpeners speak of the blades' meshing, the way a slight inward curve and a hollow ground into each inner face, called urasuki (裏スキ) just as on a single-bevel knife, guarantee that the blades touch only at the point of cut, tips rubbing with faint resistance from fully open to fully closed. That geometry, plus pivot tension, is the scissor.
This is why amateur sharpening kills scissors. Flatten the inner face on a whetstone, as you would a knife's back, and you destroy the hollow; the blades now touch everywhere or nowhere, and the scissor folds cloth instead of cutting it. Grind the edge at a knife angle and you thin the meeting line into fragility. Professional scissor sharpening is its own trade in Japan, distinct from knife sharpening, involving edge work, adjustment of the curve, and re-setting of the pivot tension as a single operation.
What the owner should actually do:
- Wipe after use. Sap, thread wax, hair product, and fingerprints all corrode carbon steel. A dry cloth, then a drop of oil on carbon-steel shears.
- Respect the assignment. Paper dulls fabric shears; wire ruins everything. One tool, one job, exactly as in the kitchen.
- Mind the pivot. If a screwed pivot loosens, cutting degrades instantly. Snug it until the blades close with light, even resistance.
- Send them out. When a good pair dulls, use a professional scissor sharpener. The service exists, it is inexpensive relative to replacement, and a forged Japanese pair will outlive its owner on that schedule.

Generally no. Scissors cut by shearing, and each blade has a slight curve and hollow inner face so the edges touch only at the point of cut. Flattening the inner face or grinding a knife-style bevel destroys that geometry. Quality scissors should go to a professional scissor sharpener, a distinct trade from knife sharpening.
