Echizen forging traces its tradition to the 14th century and the swordsmith Chiyozuru Kuniyasu, and in 1979 Echizen uchihamono became the first cutlery to receive the national Traditional Craft designation. The region works differently from Seki's factories or Sakai's division of labor: small free-forging workshops, many of them gathered at Takefu Knife Village, where smiths share a cooperative building and visitors can watch the work.

This directory covers the Echizen houses we have documented in depth. Start with the Echizen region guide for the full story, or jump straight to a maker below.

Echizen (Fukui) pairs one of Japan's oldest forging traditions with its most exciting present: Takefu Special Steel next door, a cooperative village of smiths, and names like Takamura and Kurosaki that define the modern enthusiast market.
