Japanese Natural Whetstones: The Kyoto Stone Tradition

Beneath the mountains northwest of Kyoto lie beds of fine sedimentary rock that swordsmiths and knife polishers have prized for centuries. This is an honest guide to the natural finishing stone, the tennen toishi: what it is, where it came from, why nearly all the famous mines are now closed, and whether you actually need one. We flag what is contested and omit what we cannot verify.

01 · The stone

Tennen toishi: what a natural stone is

A natural whetstone, 天然砥石 (tennen toishi) is exactly that: a sharpening stone quarried from the ground rather than manufactured. Where a synthetic stone is engineered from graded abrasive grains bonded in a matrix, a natural stone is a piece of rock whose fine, hard particles were laid down over geological time. The finest Japanese finishing stones, the ones swordsmiths and knife polishers reach for last, come almost entirely from a small region in and around Kyoto.

These fine finishing stones are known as awasedo, 合砥, sometimes written 合わせ砥. The word marks them as the final, finest stones in a progression, the ones that do the polishing rather than the heavy metal removal. Kyoto's fine natural stones are also grouped under the label Honyama, 本山, literally "true mountain," a name that originally pointed to the top mines around Mt. Atago and is now used more loosely across the tradition. When people speak of Japanese natural stones with a certain reverence, it is almost always the Kyoto awasedo they mean.

02 · The geology

The Kyoto geology, at a high level

The stones come from the mountains northwest of Kyoto, the Umegahata district near Mt. Atago and westward into the Tanba and Kameoka area. The rock is a fine siliceous mudstone or shale, and its defining ingredient is remarkable: it is built largely from the microscopic silica skeletons of radiolarians, single-celled marine organisms that rained down onto an ancient ocean floor and accumulated into sediment over immense spans of time. That is what gives the stone its extremely fine, hard, evenly distributed abrasive particles.

On the geological age, sources genuinely disagree, so we will not pin it to a single number. The host rocks belong to an accretionary complex that includes Mesozoic radiolarian cherts, and reasonable sources place the material on the order of one hundred to two hundred fifty million years old, spanning the Triassic and Jurassic. You will see popular whetstone sellers quote firmer, older figures; we treat those as marketing confidence rather than settled science. What is not in dispute is the mechanism: ancient ocean sediment, rich in silica, compressed and hardened into a rock that happens to be nearly ideal for putting a final edge on steel.

On the "250-million-year-old stone" claim. It is common to see a single precise, very old age advertised as fact. The truth is that specialist sources contradict each other, and the finishing beds sit within a Mesozoic accretionary complex whose dating varies. Calling the stones "ancient Mesozoic radiolarian sediment" is honest; asserting one exact age is not.

03 · The mines

The classic mines, and their honest status

A handful of mine names carry almost mythic weight among stone collectors. The single most important fact about them, and the one sellers rarely lead with, is that nearly all of them are closed or exhausted, most having shut sixty to seventy years ago or more. A great deal of the natural stone on the market today is old stock, dug before closure and warehoused for decades by wholesalers. Here is an honest reading of the famous names.

Nakayama 中山

Closed · the most famous name

The most celebrated of all the Kyoto finishing mines, prized for an exceptionally fine, tightly packed texture. It is closed. Its reputation is now so strong that the name is heavily invoked in the market, which is all the more reason to buy on the stone in front of you rather than the label attached to it.

Ohira 大平

Rarely active · verified reading Ohira

Read Ohira, sometimes romanized Oohira. Known for lighter, yellowish stones. It is one of the very few classic sites reported to have seen any occasional working in recent memory, though for practical purposes you should assume most Ohira stones on sale are older material.

Shoubudani 菖蒲谷

Closed · commonly cited shut in the 1970s

Read Shoubudani, or Shobudani. A historically important source, commonly described as closed since around the mid-1970s. As with Nakayama, its stones today are legacy stock.

Okudo 奥殿

Closed to semi-active · contested reading

Here the reading itself is disputed and worth stating plainly. The kanji is 奥殿. Specialist stone sources most consistently romanize it "Okudo," while the ordinary dictionary readings of the characters are "okuden" or "okudono," and a large part of the collector market sells this same mine's stones under the name "Ozuku." We present all three rather than pretending one is settled. The mine is closed or, at most, only occasionally worked.

One more name deserves an honest mention because it is the exception. The Maruoyama 丸尾山 mine in the Kameoka area, worked by the Totoriya quarry, is one of the few Kyoto natural sources still genuinely producing. If you want a natural stone from an operating mine rather than warehoused stock, this is one of the very short list of realistic answers.

"Maruka" is not a mine. You will see stones stamped Maruka sold at a premium. Maruka is a top-grade brand stamp associated with premium Nakayama stones, not the name of a separate mine. It signals a grading and a seller's reputation, not a distinct geological source.

04 · The vocabulary

The grading vocabulary

Natural stones come with a vocabulary that sounds like a secret code and is really just a mix of geology and dealer shorthand. Two things are worth separating: the names of the layers the stone came from, and the informal grades dealers assign.

Layer names

These are strata within the deposit, and they describe where in the rock a stone was cut from.

  • Suita 巣板: a prized, slightly porous layer, often fast-cutting for its fineness. Highly sought after.
  • Tomae 戸前: the layer that yields the bulk of classic finishing stones, a workhorse of the awasedo world.
  • Kiita 黄板: literally "yellow plate," a yellowish layer, often on the softer side. Note that kiita the layer is a different word from koppa, an offcut, though the two are easy to confuse.
  • Asagi 浅葱: a pale blue-grey color type, typically on the harder, finer end.

Hardness grades are an informal dealer convention

You will also see stones tagged with hardness notations, such as a "Lv" or "lv" one-to-five scale, or a given seller's own numbering. It is important to understand that there is no official standard here. Natural-stone hardness grading is a set of internally consistent, dealer-specific conventions that do not reliably convert from one seller to another. A "Lv 4" from one dealer is not guaranteed to match a "Lv 4" from the next. It is a useful hint within one seller's range, and nothing more. Ordinary synthetic grit numbers do not meaningfully apply to natural finishers at all.

05 · The tradition

Why polishers still use them

The strongest case for natural stones lives in the sword-polishing tradition. A professional Japanese blade polisher, a togishi 研師, does not finish a sword on a synthetic stone. The traditional polish runs through a progression of natural stones and ends with a set of very fine natural finger stones, thin slivers of stone worked over the surface by hand.

Among the natural stones central to this work is uchigumori 内曇, a soft natural stone prized for the way it brings up the hazy contrast that reveals the hamon and the grain of the steel. The final finger stones include hazuya 刃艶, used on the hardened edge, and jizuya 地艶, used on the body of the blade. This progression is exactly the kind of stone sequence described in our account of how a katana is polished, and it is why natural stone remains inseparable from serious sword work.

The finish these stones produce on carbon and clad steel is the kasumi , or hazy, finish: a soft, misty contrast between the hard and soft parts of a laminated blade that a bright, uniform synthetic finish simply cannot reproduce. For a togishi, and for a knife owner chasing that look on a traditional Japanese blade, the natural stone is not nostalgia. It is the tool that produces a specific, visible result.

06 · The honest comparison

Natural versus synthetic, honestly

Here is the part the romance usually skips. For most people, most of the time, a good synthetic stone is the better tool. Synthetics are more consistent, more predictable, faster, cheaper, and far easier to learn on. Two synthetic stones of the same model behave the same way; two natural stones from the same mine, even the same layer, can behave differently. If your goal is simply sharp knives, a synthetic progression will get you there with less money and less frustration.

What naturals genuinely offer is character and finish: the kasumi aesthetic on traditional clad and carbon steel, a particular tactile feedback that many experienced sharpeners love, and a direct link to a centuries-old craft. Those are real reasons to own one. They are reasons of finish, feel and tradition.

Contested claim: naturals give a sharper edge. This is not a settled fact, and we will not assert it. Naturals tend to produce a different, often very refined edge and a superior traditional finish, but there is no reliable consensus that a natural finisher makes a blade objectively sharper than a good synthetic finisher. Buy a natural for its finish and character, not on a promise of extra sharpness.

07 · Getting started

Starting without getting scammed

The natural-stone market rewards the knowledgeable and punishes the impatient. Famous mine names, disputed readings and informal grades all create room for a beginner to overpay for a stone that will not even suit their steel. Here is how to start sensibly.

Start with a koppa

A koppa 小端 is a small offcut piece of natural stone, sold cheaply because it is irregular or end-cut. It is the standard low-risk way to try a real Kyoto natural without committing to a full-size bench stone. A koppa teaches you what a natural feels like for a fraction of the price.

Expect variability

Accept up front that two naturals will not behave identically, that a stone may suit your carbon knife and fight your stainless one, and that part of the craft is learning your specific stone. This is normal, not a defect.

Do not chase the name

A mine name on a label, especially a closed mine, is a claim, not a guarantee. Buy on how a stone performs and is described, from a seller who stands behind it, rather than on a romantic label alone.

Be wary of precise prices and precise ages

The market is too variable for us to quote real prices honestly, so we will not invent any. As a rough Okami estimate only, a usable koppa often sits in the low tens of US dollars, while a graded full-size Honyama finisher climbs well into the hundreds, and prized named stones far beyond that. We give this as an order-of-magnitude gauge, based on generally observed asking ranges, not a quote; treat any firm number, on price or on age, with caution.

08 · Care

Care of natural stones

Natural stones are more delicate than synthetics and are cared for differently.

Soaking versus splash and go

Most natural finishers are used "splash and go," wetted at the surface rather than soaked. Many should not be left submerged: prolonged soaking can drive water into the sedimentary seams and increase the risk of cracking. Some stones will drink a little water and that is fine, but as a rule, do not soak a natural finisher the way you might soak a coarse synthetic.

Lapping flat

Like any bench stone, a natural needs to be kept flat. It is lapped with a diamond flattening plate or a dedicated lapping stone, before and after serious use, so the surface stays true and the swarf and slurry stay honest.

Sealing the sides

Because these stones can crack along their seams, the sides and bottom are commonly sealed with lacquer, traditionally urushi or a cashew-based lacquer, to block water ingress and reinforce the stone against splitting. The working face is never lacquered. A sealed, well-supported stone kept away from freezing and hard knocks can last for generations, which is part of why old warehoused stones are still in circulation at all.
