Kamisori: The Japanese Straight Razor

A kamisori is a single piece of forged, asymmetrically ground steel, sharpened to shave a face and honed on the same natural stones a swordsmith would recognize. It has no folding handle and no moving parts. This is the honest, verified account of what a kamisori is, how it is built, who made the great ones, and how it is kept alive today.

The Object

What a kamisori is

The word kamisori (剃刀) simply means razor in Japanese, and in English it has come to name one specific thing: the traditional Japanese straight razor. It is a wedge of steel with a tang at one end, a cutting edge along one side, and nothing else. There are no folding scales, no pivot, and no separate handle bolted on. The tang is often wrapped in cord or fitted with a simple horn or wooden grip, but the blade and its handle are one continuous piece of metal. That is the first thing that sets a kamisori apart from the Western folding straight razor, which pivots closed into a pair of scales.

The form is old. Razors of this general type were used in Japan for the tonsure of Buddhist monks and, later, in barbering and personal grooming, and the shape has stayed remarkably stable for a very long time. What matters for a modern reader is not a precise founding date, which sources tell in different ways, but the fact that the kamisori is a mature, deliberate design: a minimal tool, forged rather than assembled, sharpened to a standard that has almost no room for error because it is used against skin.

A kamisori is also, in the traditional sense, a handed tool. Because the two faces of the blade are ground differently, a given razor tends to suit a right-handed or a left-handed user, and traditional makers produced them accordingly. That handedness is a direct consequence of the grind, which is the feature that most defines the kamisori and the one most worth understanding.

It helps to say plainly what a kamisori is not. It is not a folding razor with the pivot removed, and it is not a knife pressed into shaving duty. The Western straight razor closes into a pair of scales on a pivot pin and is ground with a symmetric hollow on both faces, so it shaves the same whichever hand holds it. A kamisori has neither the scales nor the symmetry. It is closer in spirit to a single-bevel Japanese kitchen knife, a yanagiba or a deba, where a hard steel face is backed by soft iron and the geometry is deliberately one-sided, than it is to a folding razor. Understanding it as a shaving cousin of the single-bevel knife, rather than as a variant of the Western razor, is the most useful frame we can offer.

Geometry

The omote and ura grind

A kamisori is ground on both faces, like a Western razor, but the two faces are not ground the same. One side carries a pronounced hollow; the other is nearly flat, or only slightly hollowed. This asymmetry is the heart of the design, and the two faces have names.

The side with the deep hollow is the ura (), the back. The flatter side is the omote (), the front. On most razors the maker's stamp or signature sits on the ura, the hollow side, while the flatter omote is left plain. Sources describe the omote as the flatter, unstamped face and the ura as the significantly hollowed, stamped face, and that is the convention we follow here. Because one face is deeply hollowed and the other is close to flat, the finished edge sits off to one side rather than down the centerline, which is exactly why the razor becomes a handed tool.

Which side do you shave from? Traditional barber guidance is to shave mostly from the omote, the flatter side, holding that face toward the skin while the stamped ura faces outward. The logic is that the flatter face rides the contour of the face more predictably. This is guidance, not law. Experienced users note that you can shave with a kamisori however you find works, and practice varies from person to person, so treat the omote-forward rule as the traditional starting point rather than a strict requirement.

The asymmetry was not decorative. It let a maker put a small amount of very hard, expensive cutting steel where it was needed and back it with a larger body of softer, cheaper iron. Grinding the deep hollow into the softer side removed metal that was not doing the cutting, while the flatter face preserved the steel. In that sense the grind is a material economy as much as a geometry, which brings us to how the razor is actually built.

Metallurgy

Construction and steel

A traditional kamisori is a laminated blade. A thin layer of hard, high-carbon cutting steel, the hagane (), is forge-welded to a body of soft, low-carbon iron, the jigane (地金). The hard steel forms and holds the edge; the soft iron gives the blade a tough, forgiving spine and, on a kamisori, provides the mass that the deep ura hollow is ground into. This hard-over-soft lamination is the same structural idea that runs through traditional Japanese swords and kitchen knives: put the hardness where it cuts, keep toughness behind it.

The cutting steel has changed with the times. Historically, some Japanese razors were made with tamahagane, the traditional steel smelted from iron sand and charcoal in a clay furnace called a tatara, the same family of steel used for swords. Tamahagane razors are prized and were the subject of dedicated development work, because a razor edge needs a hardness beyond what a typical sword edge required. Later and today, the most respected workshops moved to imported carbon steel, in particular Swedish carbon steel, laminated to a soft jigane in the same traditional way. The lamination method stayed; the source of the hard steel modernized.

That hardness is real. Iwasaki razors have been described as hardened to roughly 64 to 65 on the Rockwell C scale, with some examples reported higher still, a level well above a normal kitchen knife. A razor is used with very light pressure against skin, so it can trade some toughness for the extreme hardness and fine edge that a close shave demands. That trade is the whole point of the object.

The vocabulary collectors use for kamisori steel overlaps with the vocabulary of Japanese knives, which is one more sign that these are branches of a single craft. Terms like white paper and blue paper steel, which name grades of high-carbon tool steel by the color of the paper the maker Hitachi wrapped them in, appear in razor discussions just as they do in knife discussions. The Iwasaki name is tied to that classifying tradition, because Kosuke Iwasaki was among the metallurgists who worked to systematize how these steels were understood. One caution on the historical record. Where sources describe exact hardness figures, tamahagane recipes, or the precise years of a workshop's founding, they do not always agree down to the number, and some figures come from sellers rather than archives. We have given the values that recur across independent accounts and flagged them as approximate where that is honest. The safe, verified core is simple: a kamisori is a laminated hard-over-soft blade, historically sometimes tamahagane and later Swedish carbon steel, hardened well beyond a kitchen knife.

The Names

The makers

Only a handful of names carry real weight in the kamisori world, and the most important is Iwasaki. Here are the makers we can verify, with the status of each stated plainly.

Iwasaki (岩崎), Sanjo, Niigata

The reference standard, still produced

The Iwasaki name is the benchmark for the traditional kamisori. Kosuke Iwasaki (1903 to 1967) was not only a razor maker but a metallurgist who studied Japanese steels and is associated with the classification of blade steels that collectors still use as shorthand, the so-called white paper and blue paper steels. In 1947 he established Sanjo Works (Sanjo Seisakusho) in Sanjo, in Niigata Prefecture, a region long known for cutlery. His research into a very hard tamahagane razor steel took years, because an ordinary sword-grade hardness was not enough to hold a razor edge.

His son Shigeyoshi Iwasaki (born 1933) carried the work forward and is remembered as the smith behind the celebrated Iwasaki tamahagane razors of the later twentieth century. The lineage did not stop with the family name. Ryoichi Mizuochi, who worked at Sanjo Works and returned to the craft, continues to make Iwasaki-pattern kamisori today, now from laminated Swedish carbon steel, and was recognized as a Master of Traditional Crafts by the Japanese government in 2014. In other words the Iwasaki kamisori is not a closed historical chapter; it is a living line of work rooted in Sanjo smithing.

Tanifuji Fukutaro

Historical, Master of Razor

Tanifuji Fukutaro is remembered as a master finisher, honored in his time as a Master of Razor and recorded as a holder of an Intangible Cultural Property designation. He worked closely with the Iwasaki workshop, handling finishing and scaling on razors, and retired in the 1970s at around age eighty. He is a historical figure, not a current maker, and we mention him because his hand is part of the story of the finest Iwasaki-era razors rather than because you can commission one today. We have seen him referred to loosely as a grand master; the designation we can verify is Master of Razor and the cultural-property recognition, so those are the ones we use.

Modern, replaceable-blade, a different object

Feather is a Japanese blade company founded in 1932 in Seki, in Gifu Prefecture, the same cutlery city we cover on our Seki page. Feather is worth naming here because it makes a modern replaceable-blade razor in the single-body kamisori style, a tool that looks like a traditional kamisori but takes a disposable blade rather than a forged, honed edge. It is an honest and popular way into that grip and shaving angle. It is not, however, the same object as a forged one-piece kamisori: there is no lamination, no jigane, and no honing on stones, because the working edge is a factory blade you replace. We draw that distinction so the two are not confused.

We have deliberately left some names off this list. Where we could not verify that a particular mark refers to a genuine, distinct kamisori maker rather than a retailer label or an uncertain attribution, we omitted it rather than guess. If we cannot stand behind a name, it does not belong on this page.

Maintenance

Honing on natural stones

A kamisori is not stropped and forgotten; it is honed, and the way it is honed follows directly from the asymmetric grind. Because the omote is flatter and the ura deeply hollowed, the two faces do not receive equal attention on the stone. Traditional practice is to hone more on the omote than on the ura, at ratios people describe variously as roughly ten to one, or seven to three, or two to one, with the exact balance a matter of the individual razor and the honer's judgment. One practical note that comes up repeatedly is that the omote should keep a very slight hollow of its own; if it is honed dead flat, the razor becomes very hard to bring back to a keen edge.

The honing surface itself is where the kamisori rejoins the wider Japanese blade tradition. The finest edges are set on Japanese natural whetstones, the fine finishing stones quarried in Japan that a straight-razor honer or a swordsmith's polisher would recognize. For a razor the finishing stone matters enormously, because the edge has to be not just sharp but comfortable against skin, a standard finer than almost any kitchen edge.

Keeping It Alive

Care and rust

A traditional kamisori is high-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel rusts. That single fact drives almost all of its care. After a shave the razor is rinsed, dried completely, and given a thin film of oil before it goes away, because water left on a carbon edge overnight is enough to start pitting, and pitting on a razor edge is not cosmetic, it is the end of a comfortable shave. A light protective oil, wiped on and mostly wiped off, is the standard defense.

Beyond rust, the discipline is the same restraint the whole object asks for. The edge is thin and hard, so it is kept off hard surfaces, stropped to realign it between honings, and honed only when it actually needs it. Signs of a healthy razor are the plain ones a barber would read at a glance: no rust, a bright and even surface, and a clean, balanced shape. A kamisori that has been dried, oiled, and honed with care can outlast the person using it, which is part of why good vintage examples are still shaved with today.

Context

The barber tradition

The kamisori did not survive as a curiosity; it survived because barbers used it. In the Japanese barbering tradition the straight razor was a professional's tool, and much of the accumulated knowledge about which side to lead with, how to hold and angle the blade, and how to hone it came down through working barbers rather than through written manuals. The omote-forward guidance, the honing ratios, and the care routine are all, in essence, shop knowledge, refined by people who shaved faces every day and could not afford a razor that pulled or nicked.

There is a devotional thread in the history as well. Razors of this kind were used to shave the heads of Buddhist monks, a ceremonial act rather than a matter of daily grooming, and that ritual use is part of why the object was made carefully and treated with respect rather than as a throwaway. Whether one traces the kamisori first to the temple or first to the barbershop, the tools that survive today reflect both: an object made to a high standard because the stakes, a clean tonsure or an unblemished shave, left no margin for a poor edge. That inheritance is why a good kamisori is still honed rather than discarded when it dulls.

That professional lineage is also why the kamisori and the Western folding razor never fully merged. The two tools solve the same problem, a close shave with a single hard edge, but they carry different habits: the folding razor its scales and its symmetric hollow grind, the kamisori its one-piece body, its asymmetric grind, and its handedness.
