Become an Okami Partner Brand
We’re selectively onboarding premium Japanese makers onto the Okami Marketplace. Editorial-first distribution, honest positioning, and a curated audience that already values craft over marketing noise.
We’re not a generic retailer
Okami Blades is an editorial-first destination for Japanese kitchen knives. Our own Classic and Premium Damascus house products sell directly; our reference library covers the category at depth; and our marketplace carries authentic partner brands that meet our editorial standards.
When a partner brand joins Okami, they’re placed inside a full editorial context: maker-specific guides, regional history pages, steel-type deep-dives, comparison pages, and our annual industry report. Buyers reach partner products through considered context, not a faceless grid.
All coverage is written by named humans on our editorial team, following a published testing methodology. We don’t rank knives we haven’t held; we don’t publish AI-generated buying guides; we don’t pretend to be a thousand-customer brand when we’re not.
Three operational models
We support three partnership structures, ranked by operational simplicity. We’ll recommend the right one based on your platform and logistics setup.
Shopify Collective
Preferred when you’re on Shopify. We import your catalog, buyer orders route to you automatically, you fulfill direct, Shopify auto-splits payment. Zero inventory on our side, zero fulfillment complexity on yours beyond your existing ops.
Curated Dropship
For non-Shopify makers with DTC infrastructure. We list your curated-selection products; when an order arrives, we forward it through a shared portal or API; you fulfill direct. Requires inventory sync agreement.
Direct Wholesale
For makers who require authorized-reseller relationships. We hold a small opening inventory, reorder on cadence. Suitable for limited-run honyaki, small-batch carbon, or other makers whose economics require traditional distribution.
All three models include editorial integration — your brand gets a dedicated maker page (like our existing Shun, Tojiro, Yoshihiro, Masamoto pages) plus inclusion in relevant category, region, and comparison content.
What we’re looking for in a partner brand
Must-haves
- Authentic Japanese-forged construction (Sakai, Seki, Echizen, Tsubame-Sanjo, Kochi, or recognized regional lineage).
- Transparent provenance. Named steel grade, HRC range, forging location, handle material disclosed on every SKU.
- Authorized-reseller status or direct-maker distribution rights.
- Consistent product data (brand name, MPN/GTIN where applicable, high-quality product imagery, accurate specs).
- Premium-tier positioning ($250+ per knife SKU). We’re not looking for sub-$100 inventory — that’s our own Classic’s territory.
- Consistent fulfillment SLA (2–10 business days; longer is fine for hand-forged custom work if disclosed).
- Returns and warranty policy clearly documented.
Nice-to-haves
- Existing English-language web presence (reduces translation overhead for product copy).
- Shopify-hosted operation (enables Collective integration).
- Press mentions, award history, or professional-chef endorsements we can reference in your maker page.
- Product photography rights for editorial use.
- Willingness to send a sample set for our editorial team to test & publish a hands-on review.
- Openness to being featured in our annual industry report.
Not a fit (please don’t apply if…)
- Products positioned as “Japanese-inspired” but manufactured without disclosed Japanese steel sourcing or named forging location.
- Sub-$100 retail tier (we already serve that market with our Classic).
- Catalogs heavy with AI-generated product photography or spec sheets that can’t be verified.
- Brands directly competing with Okami’s own Classic ($119) or Premium Damascus ($199) — we need partners who complement, not duplicate.
What to expect
- Submit interest — email info@okamiblades.com with your brand name, website, product tier, and preferred partnership model.
- Initial response within 5 business days. We’ll request your wholesale/dropship terms, catalog feed (if available), and sample availability.
- Editorial review. Our team evaluates fit, tests samples (1–3 weeks), and drafts an initial maker page.
- Integration. Shopify Collective enrollment, product import, or catalog upload depending on the selected model. Typically 1–2 weeks.
- Launch. Your brand goes live with its own maker page, appears in relevant category + region content, and receives co-marketing (inclusion in email to our subscriber list, social mentions, State of Japanese Knives coverage).
We onboard 3–5 brands per quarter. Current priority: authentic Sakai single-bevel makers, Echizen powder-steel specialists, and small-batch carbon-steel artisans.
Honest economics
We’re transparent about how the money works:
- Margin structure: partner brands set MSRP. Our marketplace margin is 15–30% depending on partnership model (Shopify Collective pays in the 20–50% range per Shopify’s documentation, giving both sides room).
- No placement fees. We don’t charge partner brands to be listed or featured. Editorial coverage is editorial, not paid.
- No MAP policing on our side. Partners set their pricing; we honor MAP where required; we don’t undercut authorized retail.
- Exclusivity is optional. We’re happy to work alongside your existing distribution. We don’t require Okami-exclusive SKUs.
- Returns & warranty are handled by the partner brand, per their existing policy. Okami provides customer-service handoff but doesn’t take warranty risk on partner products.
- Origin labeling compliance: all listings follow CBP and FTC labeling requirements. We do not permit “Made in Japan” claims for products not meeting substantial-transformation tests.
